Elk County Contacts

This is a private reference site, not a government office. We cannot check live custody, release anyone, post bond, or retrieve an official booking record. Contact the responsible public office directly.

Choose the Record Holder

Elk County has no public online jail roster, booking feed, or photo gallery. The right contact depends on whether the question concerns present jail custody, a copy of an existing county record, or the court case that followed an arrest. Sheriff counter hours and a separate records-unit line are not published, so call before visiting and do not assume the courthouse schedule applies to the jail.

Elk County Sheriff's Office and Elk County Jail
Sheriff John Walker
Undersheriff Kelly Young
100 N. Cedar St.
P.O. Box 127
Howard, KS 67349
Phone: 620-374-2108
Fax: 620-374-2483
Email: sheriff@elkcountyks.org
Hours: Not published; call before visiting
Emergency: 911

Call the sheriff for a recent booking or current location question. A person may have been released, transferred, cited, moved for medical care, or held by another jurisdiction. For a copy, send a focused written Kansas Open Records Act request to the sheriff. Ask for the existing booking record or roster entry and request the intake photo as a separate item, since Kansas permits different access treatment for basic roster facts and mugshots.

Elk County Clerk

Elk County Courthouse, first floor
127 N. Pine
P.O. Box 606
Howard, KS 67349-0606
Phone: 620-374-2490
Toll-free: 877-504-2490
Fax: 620-374-5020
Email: clerk@elkcountyks.org
General county hours: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; verify holidays

The clerk receives the county's general KORA form and can help route a written county request when needed. Those published general hours and fees are not a promise of sheriff counter access or a set booking-photo charge. Ask the sheriff for an estimate before work begins. Under K.S.A. 45-218, the custodian must act on a request as soon as possible and by the end of the third business day, but that is an action deadline rather than guaranteed production within three days.

Elk County District Court
Clerk Erin Meador
127 N. Pine
P.O. Box 306
Howard, KS 67349
Phone: 620-374-2370
Fax: 620-374-3531
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Thursday closure: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The District Court holds the filed case and later disposition, not the jail's intake photograph. Public files may be reviewed by appointment, and a public computer is available at the courthouse. Bring the case number when possible. Charges recorded at booking are accusations and can be amended, declined, dismissed, diverted, or resolved in court.

Use these routes for common questions:

  • For a mugshot, booking record, recent arrest, present custody, release, or transfer, start with the Elk County Sheriff's Office and the county booking lookup.
  • For filed charges, hearing events, or the outcome, use the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal and confirm the case with Elk County District Court.
  • For a person sentenced to Kansas state custody or supervision, use the Kansas Department of Corrections KASPER offender search. It is not a county booking roster.
  • For release or transfer alerts in participating county jails, check Kansas VINE and confirm current Elk County coverage. VINE does not supply mugshots.
  • For a federal prisoner, use the Bureau of Prisons locator. For immigration detention, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Neither service displays a booking photo.
